Syd is a very proud New Zealand born Australian, from the township Mt. Maunganui in the North Island. His motorcycling adventures began in 1970 when, like a lot of riders, a mate introduced him to the pleasure of riding via a Suzuki 100cc two stroke.  This set in train a forty year passion for riding moving beginning with some fairly serious two strokes. After marriage and kids forced a three year break in the 80’s Syd returned to motorcycling with a Kawasaki Z900. He has been an avid Kawasaki fan ever since.

Syd is a regular participant on club rides and enjoys these rides as well as his occasional trip to Brisbane via the backroads.

Having retired after 32 years of service with Ergon Syd has had time to restore his Z900 to beautiful condition.  Always ready to improve his bikes Syd has sometimes been referred to as “gadget man” with a variety of innovations trialled on his ZRX. This has ranged from the CD stacker under the seat to homemade heated grips. MP3 players, hi visibility flashing headlights, heated vests and helmets with built in rear view mirrors are some of the other things he has trialled with varying success. We all look forward to seeing the latest addition to his bike and getting his report on its success.

Married to Margaret and with 2 adult daughters he is an avid Squash player as well as enjoying a game of tennis. While Syd and Margaret enjoy the occasional cruise ship holiday together she is very understanding of his passion for riding and doesn’t mind him taking off on the bike for a few weeks. This is his favourite type of ride, a long distance ride over a few weeks, keeping off the main highways and seeing what the county side has to offer. His most memorable rides include several trips to Phillip Island for the racing and touring the South Island of New Zealand.
